APPAREL REVIEW:
Steve Mill
The Mistake EP
[True Romance]
As I was about to shut my laptop down and finally enjoy some short holiday here comes Tensnake and his True Romance Records with an EP I didn’t know I needed: Steve Mill’s ‘The Mistake’.
The Greek-born producer, who’s music is already known to the electronic masses for having been released on some prominent imprints like Dirt Crew/Simples & Large Music, delivers an estival five-track EP which includes five different versions of the same tune, the aforementioned, and title track, ‘The Mistake’.
I got to say I always cautiously approach such records, with some kind of a ’show me what you got’ forma mentis. In fact -and it’s something that comes from my current extremely suspicious sonic mentality, which is not necessarily a good thing- I tend to get quickly bored by such bodies of work, finding them often repetitive. But that’s not the case, otherwise I wouldn’t be writing about it (I never write about things I don’t like, whereas writing -therefore thinking- about records I love, helps me to give a sense to ‘em).
But here’s the part of the show where we get real.
Steve enlists the help of the Zurich-based singer Geraldine to create the blasting, charming melodies that enrich the arrangement of the seminal track (Extended Mix), making it an all around complete and flawless Disco-House tune, the perfect stepping stone to allow the listener to move forward. And here comes the honcho’s version: Tensnake’s Remix. True Romance Records owner speeds up the tempo, helps himself with some masterly chopped original vocals and writes down a slightly more club-ish harmonic progression, while the ‘Dub Mix’ waits in line ready to diffuse its silky sonic vibes and its percussive soul, which flows effortlessly till’ the end of the tune.
Then the ‘Original Mix’, which is just a shorter version of the first, prolonged opening track, prepares the ground for the concluding Remix of ‘The Mistake’ by Amalle & Yambow, where the pair spice things up giving their eccentric, rapid and (arrangement-wise) noteworthy variation on the theme: the three breakdowns and the intro help the evolution of the remix and generate an unbroken atmosphere of anticipation, that makes the path leading to the end seductive. It took me a while to find the right word to describe this EP but eventually I found it. I would describe this journey into Steve Mill’s and his fellow musician’s world as musically seductive and captivating, which is not easy when handling a kick/snare/hi-hat/bass-line etc. On the contrary, it can be a plain-sailing into the trap of monotony, colourlessness; but thanks to the artist and the prominent producers/singers that helped him along the way, his ‘The Mistake’ EP -out the near 19th of August on True Romance Records- is a demonstration of how you can build great things using simple tools.
Strongly suggested.
