APPAREL REVIEW:

Mattr
Tal / Rand
[Loft & Sound]

Mattr and his EP 'Tal' offer us a synthetic but meaningful musical vision, a sort of style exercise in which it’s not necessary to exaggerate nor to overdo in order to tell a sound-based story; if the inspiration it's so strong, one can even ‘squeeze’ it into two tracks and, in my opinion, it's even better.

It's always a little bit disruptive and -at the same time- challenging to try to find the right words to make sense of a piece of music. I would like to make it clear that, on this very platform, we’re no journalists, we’re not people who write about music for a living. We are -first and foremost- music lovers, who occupy a place in the music industry and, for these reasons, when we talk about a record we do it with our heart, with the utmost respect for the people who worked behind the scenes to make a record see the light. In saying this I want to underline how, here on our web pages, you will never find articles written on projects in which we don't believe. We do not measure every word to create articles that shouldn’t displease anyone. When we write about a record it's because we got something to say, because it generates certain emotions within us. That being said, this record belongs to the category of the ones that make us feel something, it contains something new, it has an authentic and genuine taste, despite being remarkably complex on a technical level; it brings us back to a universe of meticulously calibrated but not aseptic sounds, on the contrary, it features a very balanced rhythmic, harmonic, melodic ecosystem that moves in unison, which pulsates, lives and gives us amazingly good vibrations. Who knows, perhaps it was the city of London -where Mattr now lives- with its impetuous energy, its lights, its hidden corners and its intriguing atmospheres, that inspired the artist in the composition of this beautiful EP, which includes the title track ‘Tal’ - with its concentrated and dense rhythms, the harmonic leaps, its sweetly melancholic touch and ‘Rand’, which features a stunning sonic progression, a masterfully arranged sonic climax, flaring-up in all its rhythmic power and enveloping the track with a controlled fury, a positive agitation, which makes it an extremely original composition. To subtract rather than add is part of the process of making fewer things worth, instead of diminishing the value of more things, and this is one of reasons why we appreciate Mattr’s work on this record: cutting it down to the very core of it. Last but not least, the release platform is the Birmingham born producer’s own imprint, Loft & Sound, which we thank -together with the man himself Mattr- for producing such a nice record, which we don't want to classify in any genre, because it represents his own, very personal and unique genre. We highly suggest to listen to it!
