Yulio – Venus LP

[Diffuse Reality]

"The sunny season is about to start, new releases are swirling and new music to listen to just piles up on my desk, yet, amongst the bulky stockpile of unlisted things there’s an album that caught my attention right away: Yulio’s fourth LP to date called ‘Venus’, recently released on the Catalan imprint Diffuse Reality as the 48th issue on their catalogues. The ten tracks which compose the record just naturally flow from the beginning to the end in an effortless, classy yet eerie, mysterious stream. As I plunged into the Chilean producer’s sounds, I found it quite natural to empathise with him, as Venus sounds like the typical work composed by a musician who finally reached his sonic maturity and perfectly knows how to express his musical feelings, dragging them into an album. Personally I’ve always been fascinated by the people who make it look easy even if their thing is quite complex and Yulio created such a cohesive and solid LP, where all the details come together acting as a supporting cast to strengthen up the sense of the whole thing, making it sound more like a long concert with its movements rather than just a bunch of cool tracks. This is the best compliment I could make about someone else’s work as I love albums that strike instantly but need to be listened many times to fbe fully understood. One of Yulio’s trademarks -which he comes up with throughout the whole LP- are the open, spacey, intertwining atmospheres which give birth to new sonic ecosystems, like tiny little living matters feeling comfortable into their very own environs. This delicate, elegant yet stable, substantial fashion of managing his sounds make this album either easy to listen as well as full of brain-shaking inputs. Every peace that composes the system -from the meeker, smoother, shorter tracks to the frantic, longer and darker rhythms- moves tightly together towards the end of a tunnel full of sonic emotions. When I hear such kind of albums I find it quite hard to get into technicalities, being em so mature, personal, and heartfelt but also being them a true transposition of an intimate message; all this makes the judging/rating totally useless. What I can undoubtedly say is that when I hear new music my yardstick is very strict: would I buy this record or not? Well, in this case the answer is a 100% yes. Shouts to Yulio and his Venus and big ups to Diffuse Reality for making this possible. I love it."

Yulio – Venus LP

[Diffuse Reality]

"When we first listened to ‘Needed You’ EP by the Berlin based duo She Lies we felt instantly engaged and decided it was definitely worth a review. The four-track record (out this month on EXLOVE, a new imprint run by the guys from Rework) contains multiple sonic inputs, evoking a past Disco, dark wave of Indie and Punk which was incredibly rooted in Berlin’s underground culture in the 80s, 90s, early 00s and basically -since then- never left. This miscellaneous of sounds is, in fact, extremely characteristic of Berlin. Born in the incredibly fertile ground of a city that since the beginning of the 20th century has been at the forefront of a very own dark-cabaret scene. Many underground little, dark venues and bars were the venues where this ‘wave’ started and which became a true artistic movement, giving birth -throughout the years- to this peculiar, Berlin own sound. Its defining characteristics are the slightly repetitive, obsessive and sometimes ironic melodies, the choice of Deep sounds, the lysergic, ghostly and mysterious vocals or spoken word (often women’s), the openness of the atmospheric pads, which perfectly recall the environment of the German capital with its huge open spaces, often inherited by the consequences of the dramatic bombings during WW2. But going back to the EP, since the opening track ‘Met You’ the big presence of a manic synthesis research becomes clear with its driving force and each tune acts as a piece of a little puzzle coming together with the help of many music-related feelings that the artists impeccably express. ‘Changing our life’ is the meeker part of the soul, with its shamelessly exposed melodies. Its open and airy sounds remind of a sunset in Tempelhof, while the acid basslines give strength to the composition. ’Dare’ bring some shadows back on the landscape and the cinematic touch of the closing track ‘Talking With You’ takes the listener by the hand toward the end of the EP. Anni and Ele -aka She Lies- with their ‘Needed You’ EP deliver a strong and cohesive work, where all the above mentioned musical details are present and very personally manipulated. They manage to give their interpretation of this specific -Berlin’s own- sound, creating a very intense record which perfectly fits the mood of this incredibly variegated, culturally active, open city and becoming its worthy sonic daughters!"
