APPAREL REVIEW:

Rich Medina, Rob Paine, Heights
Philadelphia
[Worship Recordings]

Listening to this wonderful three-track EP called 'Philadelphia', by Rich Medina, Rob Paine, Heights, released on Worship Recordings, I firstly noticed how it is so packed of particulars and references, therefore it took me a while to understand and thoroughly appreciate it.

Although the tracks rapidly spread a strong energy, which is immediately evident, they are so accurately produced that they require several listenings to allow the ears to decode and appreciate ‘em. The music I prefer, in fact, is the one that strikes instantly for its vigour and intensity but which I know I’ll have to listen many more times in order to notice every little detail that orchestrates it. And it is precisely the case of this EP which, in addition, presents two variations on the same theme, two completely different versions of the same track, two different characters with different personalities, protagonists of the same story, plus an instrumental version of the first OG track. Worship Recordings, the illustrious imprint behind the making of this project, represents its hometown of Philadelphia, the city of Brotherly Love, with this stunning Deep House, Lo-Fi, Tech-House EP composed of two versions of the title track plus a ‘Raw Life Remix’ by Demarkus Lewis. The original compilation containing ‘Philadelphia’ (which I guiltily missed) was released back in 2016 but has now been revived and refreshed by the skilled hands of Jay-J Hernandez (Shifted Music), who re-mastered the whole pack. The arrangement of the OG version is bursting with character and presents a very complex composition full of instruments chasing each other, contributing to create a dense musical ecosystem, like that of a rainforest, but in which every element is not superfluous but essential to the conception of a wonderful and powerful groove, giving life to everything, just like it happens in nature. Rich Medina's eloquent, vivid and passionate lyrics, which he clearly dedicates to Philly, the city that raised him, are the essential icing on the cake that makes everything even more powerful and expressive. Demarkus Lewis, on remix duties, as always gives his productions a very recognisable touch, making everything he does the perfect compromise between something deep and poignant and -at the same time- perfect to dance to in a club. I hope you’ll be able to listen to this beautiful record as soon as possible and let us know your sensations, or even just enjoy it in silence, without saying a word.
