Now & Next: Christophe Salin

Now & Next is a quick-fire interview series built around two simple but telling questions. We ask artists to reflect on where they’re at in their career and creative journey, and where they’re headed next. For each answer, they pick two tracks: one that sums up where they’re at right now, and another that hints at where they’re going. The artists also drop a few lines about each track, giving us a peek into their creative mindset.

Where Am I?

Hello, thank you very much for inviting me to this interview. I find the task very interesting and have had to think about it for a long time. The questions helped me a lot to concretise my goals for the future. I have just released my new EP ‘Melodies & Harmonies’. After my album ‘Ocean & Cliffs’, which was heavily centred around sound design, I wanted to produce a classic deep house EP as my next project. I love house music. This music gives me a lot of strength and positive energy and the values it stands for mean a lot to me: love, respect and equality. I aimed to produce tracks that work in the club and have an emotional impact. I therefore focussed on melodies and harmonies. I am very happy about the positive feedback I receive from many DJs, whom I greatly appreciate.

Where Am I Going?

At the moment, I just want to continue on the path that I have worked hard to achieve. I'm looking forward to the moment when everything - inspiration, knowledge, experience and skills such as conscious, analytical listening - come together even more and the process of making music becomes even more intuitive. As I said before, I need to become braver (...I'm making progress :-) ) I'm also looking forward to choosing/creating sounds more consciously through experience. My aim is to produce tracks that you want to immerse yourself in, that take you away and that you enjoy listening to out loud because you enjoy it. I want to share my emotions and tell my stories - I believe that when it all comes together, great projects will emerge. This is an ambitious goal though, as it also requires inner balance and self-reflection, in addition to inspiration, knowledge, experience and skills.

Track (Now):
Llane Gran y Petit
Christophe Salin

"I've learnt a lot over the last few years and have been working intensively on music theory, sound synthesis, music production and mastering. I'm slowly getting the feeling that everything is coming together and playing together. I'm starting to gain a certain confidence in dealing with equipment. Which synthesiser for which sound, which compressor for which task, which EQ for which purpose. I'm getting faster and having more fun in the studio. I developed everything on the ‘Melodies & Harmonies’ EP myself, from the idea to the mastering, and I'm very proud of that. I realise that I've found my way. I still need to be a bit braver, to be more daring, but I think that will develop with more experience."

Track (Next):
Beau Mot Plage
Isolée

"This track from 1998 changed the music world and has inspired so many different artists - Âme ‘Rej’ is heavily influenced by the sound aesthetic of this track, as well as the sound of Stimming, but also Kenny Dope and many others have been inspired by ‘Beau Mot Plage’. I think this track still sounds futuristic. Still fresh. Still inspiring. Like Matisse's cut-outs. Something like that doesn't get old and doesn't wear out."
