APPAREL REVIEW:

Genius Of Time
Sunswell
[Oath]

One of the most visionary artists of all time, the very much missed Frank Zappa, once said that writing about music is like dancing about architecture. In fact, we couldn’t agree more. But one thing is forcing yourself to write about everything you listen to, another thing is picking carefully the records you like, choosing them and then trying to find the right words to describe em, without judging nor criticising, just sharing your POV on something you really dig.

That’s what we aim to do here on our Apparel Review section, as writing about music is not our primary activity, is something we choose to do every now and then, and strictly about music we like. That’s the case for the next EP on Oath -the sixth release to date for the young, promising label- which hosts the duo Genius Of Time (consisting of Nils Krogh and Alexander Berg) and their stunning three track record called ‘Sunswell’. The pair, hailing from Sweden, succeeds in bringing all the natural, spacey, at times abstract sonic characteristics of their motherland but with great modernity. The ability to design new sounds and place them in a futuristic dimension of space and time has always been one of the peculiarities of Scandinavian music, but in this case Genius Of Time are able to overtake another limit: that is to fill this dimension, restricted in just three tracks, of sonic details, unusual acoustic ideas and agile rhythms, giving the listeners time to elaborate, understand and enjoy what they are listening to. A thing for a few. Sunswell flows natural right from the kick-off, a sign of the fact that the duo feels quite comfortable to invent and experiment new things, which is something that is not to take for granted when talking about individuals pairing up to work on a specific project. Listening to this record I felt the spontaneity with which G.O.T produced the 25 minutes of their EP. From the atmospheric delicacy and sophistication of the opening -and title track- Sunswell, with its sparse acoustic minutiae and its firm rhythm section, to the Broken feel of the following ‘Taurino Shuffle’ with its faster pace and the masterly arranged harmonies led by some dense and groovy chords, to the initially shadier but evolving energy of Purple Motus -the closing tune- that eventually breaks out into a Dyonisian explosion of notes and accents, the whole record is an ever-changing, inspiring piece of music. This is our opinion and we encourage you to have yours on Sunswell by Genius Of Time, as we think it might be one of the coolest records of Summer 2022. You won’t have to wait long as it will drop on the 22nd of July, in just a few days.

The EP will be out both digital and vinyl so follow Oath for more news and for their future releases.
