Now & Next: Ghosten

Now & Next is a quick-fire interview series built around two simple but telling questions. We ask artists to reflect on where they’re at in their career and creative journey, and where they’re headed next. For each answer, they pick two tracks: one that sums up where they’re at right now, and another that hints at where they’re going. The artists also drop a few lines about each track, giving us a peek into their creative mindset.

Ghosten Q&A

Where Am I?

As the sunrise illuminates my bedroom, I take a deep breath. I stand at the very beginning of a new, winding, adventurous path. Its direction is merely dictated by elements of dreams rather than a hard thought out plan. Letting the music take me. The opening of doors, the taking of steps. Joyful, Frightening, Adventurous, Curious, Anxious all of the emotions shall shape the path. I'm never not trying, thinking, living, breathing music. Being away gave perspective. It's a return, a second chance to seize the upportunities. Another chance to spread joy and happiness through music and dancing. I keep telling myself "Enjoy every moment, be happy for whatever comes your way". I know what get's me going - I will stay true to my mission. A mission to keep living life through the lens of music, community, friendship and adventure. To be grateful for what I've got, and what is to come. To do my best to be a great friend, first and foremost my own friend. Being the person I aspire to be. Towards myself, and others. I've spent 30+ years playing music, and even longer loving music. It's an integral part of my exsistence. A life long companion, a life long passion. A sun never setting - a path never ending. Serving as a subtle reminder to appreciate each breath. I'm at peace. Time to manifest.

Where Am I Going?

How to describe what has not yet come to pass - is not only impossible, but the need to always know could perhaps be our biggest flaw as conscious humans. If you expect the future to adjust to your reality, dreams or wishes - will you then ever be truly happy, fulfilled or at peace? In the unknown lies the upportunity to accept it as that, and embrace whatever outcome that lies ahead and deal with it accordingly. Music is in my blood, I have faith it will take me exactly where I’m supposed to be. So far that has been true. From now to eternity is a constant transition - keeping a thorough look at what’s going on around me, and hoping to nudge my path in a direction until I get it just right.

Track (Now):
Crown Heights Affair - Dreaming a Dream
(Goes Dancin')

"Both pieces of music I chose are in many ways extremely well made. Something I aspire to. There’s a lot of things about both compositions that I really find fascinating, and trying to incorporate that into my own music through the means of live recording, microphones, analog gear and both producing and playing techniques has been the main focus on this journey. Having more harmonic and melodic progression was something I knew I wanted to achieve, but there was also something about the aesthetics that I knew I wanted to learn. I would argue that these 2 tracks both changed my perception of dance music. It is possible to make music that works extremely well on modern dance-floors and sound systems that aren’t electronic in nature."

Track (Next):
Aretha Franklin
Get It Right

"Again, both pieces are very pristine and incredibly rich pieces of music. Serving as guiding stars on the sky, these and all tracks that have been inspiring me over the last 30 years could deserve a mention. There is so much good music, how to choose, you know? As a musician, I’m always learning and growing. Trying out new techniques, sounds and ideas. It’s intrinsic to my nature to always try to improve and evolve. Both musically and personally. I chose these as the titles and thematics of the songs are related to each specific chapter of the journey. Dreaming a dream and getting it right, whatever that might be at that given time. Essentially I am at both places at the same time, always dreaming, and always following those dreams."
