Zeynep Uysal Q&A

Next issue of Club Couture is all about Zeynep Uysal, a designer who refuses to fit in one box. American-Turkish, Milan-based, trained in Product Design, her practice slides between objects, materials, tech, fashion, photography and everything in between. Curiosity and experimentation drive it all: AI, biomaterials, creative direction, entrepreneurship. The result is design that feels current, culturally sharp and actually means something.

-Where are you from?

- Im Turkish American. My roots are Turkish but i was born in the US.

-What kind of background did you grow up with?

- My mom is a math teacher and my dad was an electronical engineer, my household has always been very strict and technical which is why I think my passion grew more in creative practices.

-How did you end up choosing your current practice?

- I didn’t choose, it just came to me. I am very intuitive and always listen to my inner voice, one day that voice told me to go to an italian university consultancy, i went there and found out about the design majors here, next thing i know, I started going to an atelier near by my house to prepare my first portfolio in interior and product design.

-How would you describe your style or your work?

- My style of product design is geometrical, sculptural and fluid. I love working with wood and metal, and want to work with marble in the future. I moved between experimental projects and commercial works that focus on solving the needs of the market. But behind all objects and projects, my main goal is to find a problem to solve or to improve a system.

-What are your main artistic influences?

- I absolutely love david lynch and virgil abloh, their multi disciplinary approach to art and design is exactly how i aim to implement different disciplines in my process.

-What is your relationship with the city of Milan?

- I love Milan, it is the city that shaped who i am. I grew into a real professional and a real artist here. Of course there is a lot of things that needs improving in this city, a lot of potential that is not being used, but I’m not the one to spread negativity. The only point I want to make is creative community should unite more, we are each others support.

-If you were a object?

- If i was an object i would be an iconic lighting piece, like the arco floor lamp. I could work when they need me at night, and rest in the morning. Illuminating spaces and being a part of the conversations that emerge.

-If you were a city?

- If I was a city, I would definitely be Barcelona, the sea, music, food and the energy of the people is a lifestyle and feeling I really resonate with.

-If you were a geometric shape?

- If i was a geometric shape I would be a sphere, represents infinity and continuity in my eyes.

-If you were a food?

- And for food, I have to go with sushi, and please don’t ask me which one because I love them all.

-What would be your music for the Couture Club?

- My music for couture club is Polaroïd/Roman/Photo by Ruth. I studied in a french high school for 5 years, and absolutely love these types of songs that evoque mystery and emotion.
