Brunch.wav and his Only One EP

- Hi Riley, how are you and how does it feel like releasing music on Apparel Music?

Hi Apparel Music Crew! First of all, I couldn’t be better. It’s Friday afternoon as I’m writing this and I’m seeing some friends tonight and will be spinning some tunes poolside on a hot summers day. I’ll definitely be testing out the masters from this release and see how the energy is with some of my best friends who have been along with me during my time as a DJ and producer. I’m very thankful to have them in my life to support me and share these moments. As far as releasing on Apparel Music, I’m absolutely stoked! Some of my favourite records have come off the label including 008A1 by Apparel Wax and Piano House by Salary Boy. I’m also extremely grateful to be able to release on the same label as legends who have inspired me such as Madcat and Moodyman. I’d also like to thank Apparel for giving me this opportunity, it really means the world to me.

- Talk us through the creative process behind the making of this EP. How did it come about and how did you work on it?

Absolutely! My creative process typically takes place over the weekend, which is when I’ll focus on making one new track. I like to jam out with one idea and turn it into a full track over the course of the weekend. This way I’m consistently coming up with new songs and am able to really just enjoy the process of creating without overthinking it. My setup is pretty minimalistic, with an Ableton Push, a 303 and a pair of Kali LP-8 monitors connected to my MacBook Air. I also have an Arturia keyboard that I’ve been using to learn piano over the past few years which has helped my knowledge of musical theory and playing melodies.

- Could you share with us three tracks that inspired you during the making of the record?

Of course! The first track I’d like to mention is the song that got me into producing in the first place and that I’ve tried to capture the essence of in all of my music, which is Winona by DJ Boring. This track is one of the most beautiful tracks I’ve ever heard and captures a lot of emotion, which are 2 key elements to my productions. The second track that I’ll mention is the song Evening Drive by Chris Stussy, which has the same vocal as the featured track on this EP, Only One. I found the vocal on Splice and knew I had to do something special with it. The song really just came together easily and it’s always a great feeling when that happens. The last track that I’d like to mention is the song Never Alone by Cody Currie. Cody has been a big inspiration for me in my productions. He’s a young guy with a ton of talent, who strictly makes jazzy house music which is one of my favourite types of house music, along with deep and minimal house.
