Now & Next: Victor Tomasi

Now & Next is a quick-fire interview series built around two simple but telling questions. We ask artists to reflect on where they’re at in their career and creative journey, and where they’re headed next. For each answer, they pick two tracks: one that sums up where they’re at right now, and another that hints at where they’re going. The artists also drop a few lines about each track, giving us a peek into their creative mindset.

Where Am I?

Right now I feel like I’m in a pretty clear place musically. I’m still very attached to the spirit of 90s house a very physical, very human music made for the dancefloor, but I try to approach it with more precision. I spend a lot of time working on the sound, the groove, and the balance between the different elements. I like the idea of keeping something raw and instinctive while searching for a certain finesse in the production.

Where Am I Going?

I’m moving toward music that is a bit more composed. It still lives in that house DNA, but with more writing inside the tracks, more breathing space, more trajectory. I try to think of tracks as spaces that evolve rather than only functional tools for the club. The idea is to keep the energy of the dancefloor while paying more attention to the narrative and the emotional sensitivity of the track.

Track (Now):
First Look in San Diego
Demuir

"Demuir is definitely a reference point for where I am musically right now. I love the raw and powerful side of his music. It has a real punch on the dancefloor, but at the same time it remains very groovy and musical. For me it’s a great example of that balance between instinct, groove and energy that I’m always trying to keep in my own tracks."

Track (Next):
Together
S-Pazz

"The duo Spazz also illustrates a direction I’m interested in exploring. I’m not trying to do exactly what they do, but their music shows how house can become more composed and detailed. It’s a good example of a track that feels very worked in terms of arrangement and musical ideas. Hopefully my music will move in that direction too, in a punchier and more personal way."
