Tuccillo Q&A

-Hi there, how is it going?

- Hello Apparel family, everything is going well ☺.

-Tell us why you decided to leave your hometown for Spain.

- Before going to the island (Ibiza) for the first time, back in the days, I was already producing music in Naples. Then I met the founder of Fliyng Records and gave him a demo of a project called ‘Beat Access’ for a new label named ‘Undiscovered’. As a result of this collaboration he proposed also to collaborate with some artists from Ibiza to create together more music of that same kind -Chill Out- and also for compilations and 2001 was the year where ‘Chill Out’ became the new ‘thing’.
Dj Pippi’, one of those artists, suggested that we should go and see the island first during summer, on vacation, and that, if we liked it there, we could have moved there during Autumn, with all our gear and equipment, ready to make new music. And of course, after seeing Ibiza in summer with so many people, crazy parties, beautiful nature, we both agreed on moving out as quickly as possible. Finally another very magical thing that happened to me: as soon as I moved to the island on November 2001, I meet Eva, the woman of my life and the person with whom I share everything, in fact she is my adrenaline, my energy, my inspiration.
It was above all her who gave me the strength to start releasing my music with my name Tuccillo, without being ashamed of it. I had many monikers before deciding to use my family name as a stage name.

-We know your initial destination has been Ibiza. Describe to us what this mythical place means for you and how has it changed throughout the years.

- Ibiza for me keeps on being a unique and wonderful place. Its natural power does not change. But if people change, ambitions also change, so maybe the investors wanted to attract a different audience over the years. For this reason there’s things that disappear and others that are born. For example the iconic ‘Space Ibiza’, where I had the immense luck to start my career as a resident DJ in 2006. Now is a different space, where different things happen but somehow still keeps its Ibizan soul intact.

-Where do you live now? Do you think you finally found your place?

- Now I am living in a small town in the Valencian Community, surrounded by nature, peace and an environment quite similar to the Ibizan one. But I keep going to ‘the island’ frequently as it takes me half an hour to arrive by plane. At the moment I don't think I have found my place and the fact of being able to make music for so much time, in different places, makes me think that this adds a special taste to my music which is very interesting. So at the moment I don't think much about where I want to settle down, I like to keep moving around as I always did. After the first Ibiza spell I moved to Madrid in 2004 for one year and then to Barcelona another two before coming back to Ibiza for good in 2006. So, now in another area, but always close to the island.

-What keeps you busy at the moment? How does your personal career have evolved and what’s your main focus now?

- My life is more or less the same as always, perhaps without the frenetic life of a DJ with many gigs and trips but more focused on the studio and production. I challenged myself to try to create music not only for club’s purposes but also for video games, ads, or collaborating with artists on audiovisual projects. Then I also have several monikers like Tuccinelli which is my stage name for Downtempo (Balearic) music, and I have also created a new concept that is to mix Electro rhythms, and more Balearic sounds, calling it Electrobalearic “:D easy” and this is really surprising me with the good response I have had with the public.

-Give us your opinion about the current situation of the music industry and the market.

- Being direct and sincere, right now is a moment of transition for many reasons but especially regarding digital music. We are all psyched up that there are more people streaming than buying music so the plans also change and the formats too. I am a vinyl lover but I am really aware it’s becoming an expensive format that does not sell in large quantities. It comes a time when you can no longer call job something where you only invest money in something that does not work for you and that simply ‘IS BEAUTIFUL’, so I'm in this transition mood right now where I’m starting to share my music also on Bandcamp, Traxsource, Spotify etc etc.

-Describe to us your daily routine, if you have one. How much time do you spend in your beloved studio?

- I dedicate my time to the things I love the most: my studio, my music and sometimes my cats : D.
When I can, I try to be in the nature as much as I can as for me being surrounded by nature is a way of meditating, of cleaning the mind and looking for inspiration. During the past two years I really missed going to clubs, also to try my music in there and in recent years, due to health reasons I decided not to make long trips, or go to DJ in big venues as, in fact, I love small gigs in small clubs, where you can play vinyl close to the audience. I miss that a lot.

-Tell us about your new label and some future projects you wanna share with us and our readers.

- Currently as I was telling you, I’m working on several projects, developing my monikers akas and sub-label, Unblock, that I started in Ibiza in 2013. Then Modern Manners, which is more focused on Balearic and Downtempo, then Electrobalearic which is a Series. I also have a duo, Doublet, with Tomoki Tamura and now I have just launched another label called ‘House of tucci’ that is more focused on House with a very 90s sound. All this is being released in digital. Then I always have new EPs cooking for other labels, like Apparel :D and some remixes.

-Thanks very much for taking some of your time to chat with us. It’s been a pleasure.

- The pleasure is mine and we can now celebrate our long friendship.
